Additional Funplex Information

Along with producer Steve Osborne (New Order, Happy Mondays, Doves) the band have created an album as cutting edge, distinctive & danceable as their debut album in 1979. The B-52's influence cuts a wide path through much of so-called Modern Rock-- from the low-fi efforts of nouveau garage bands and the Retro-Hip of Ultra-Lounge to the very ascendance of Dance music itself. Twenty years and 20 million albums into a career that began as a low-rent lark in Athens, Georgia, the B-52's remain the most unlikely Pop superstars ever. The first band to glorify Pop culture with an almost Warholian sense of purpose, their absurd B-movie style and off-kilter sound celebrated the weirdness lurking just beneath the surface of Americana. EMI. 2008.

What Customers Say About Funplex:

It's just a perfect dancey, take-me-back-to-the-hippie and 80s-era smash album. I just recently came across the new album by the B-52s as of June 2009, and I must say.this is a tremendous album. I realize this came out in 2008. The sexual quips within their songs is also well-contrived. The B-52s are BACK. They stay true to form with this one. This will forever be an album to play non-stop, especially during summers. I LOVE THE B-52s.

I've owned or currently have just about every original release from the B52's, and have enjoyed most everything, including Funplex. Vocally, the ladies do well while Fred is better at shouting the words in exclamatory joy. While 'white hot shimmy in a Lurex gown' is fun to sing, much of the remaining content for Hot Corner don't show much creativity.

They have never been accused of taking themselves too seriously, and all the album tracks reflect that. Maybe there was an impatience to write after taking so many years off. It would be tough to pull off another Cosmic Thing success story, but the writers have the talent so it's not out of the question. This CD is more techno, but it's the same essential dance disc you would expect from the Georgian Fab 4.The good - even after so many years, Fred, Kate, and Cindy are still having fun.

Same deal to some extent with Funplex, though you'll never hear the line 'chandelabra in a Wonder Bra' *anywhere* but at the Funplex.Their tunes have always had a sense of innuendo to them, this time around they made it much more overt, again I sense a lack of creativity. It's nearly impossible to listen to this at work without the toes tapping or the legs bouncing. The not so good - As a whole, I'm not very impressed with the lyrical creativity of the CD. A number of the tracks have an excess of repetition.

If so, I hope they knock the rust off and release another disc by '11 or '12.Overall, the disc has some ups and downs. :-)I dig the techno beat infusion, it's a nice enhancement to their sound.

This is a very suprisingly great CD. There is a great variety of sound, mixing dance with punk themes and that great B-52's sound we all love. It's a shame we have to wait once a decade for a new CD from this band, but it is well worth the wait.Juliet Of The Spirits, Eyes Wide Open and Deviant Ingredient are my personal favorites from this CD. Check it out.

I would also note the sophomoric lyrics, but of course in previous outings that was a part of the appeal. I bought this with great anticipation based on my longtime love of the B-52's, the good advance word and an interview with Keith Strickland that talked about his interest in electronic dance music. I think my problem with the lyrics was more related to the non-stop emphasis on the party.going to the freaky zone, getting freaky, partying all night long, and an arm's length of references to doing the dirty. I can't tell you how utterly deflated those expectations were upon listening to this disc, even after repeated listenings. I wanted to feel the love but this was just an unoriginal and bland pastiche of beats and harmonies. That might have been alright if you were just out of high school but somehow coming from the AARP generation (of which I am now a member also) it just felt a little desperate. With all that said, musically speaking Kate, Cindy (so good to see you back) and Fred could not have sounded better, the energy level felt high and occasionally I could almost feel the rock and roll fighter jet taking off but ultimately it ended up being an overweight B-52 laden with too much baggage.

Great CD, great songs and of course the greatinterpretation. It is excellent that Cindy is back. One of the best groups ever.PUMP is the new love shack.
